A
Siesta Key institution. As far
as an island feel restaurant
goes, the Old Salty Dog is pretty
hard to beat. The newly renovated
outside dining area is as good
as it gets for Siesta Village.
There is no great view of the
gulf or the bay but it has a
fantastic island atmosphere.
The
menu choices are typical island
restaurant/bar fare. The grouper
sandwich ($ 8.95) comes grilled
or blackened and is always a
good size portion. The Salty
Dog ($ 3.95) is the signature
dish. basically a deep fried
hot dog. Great fun food. They
also have Salty Dog bites for
an appetizer or maybe a for
a kid size appetite.
The
full lunch and dinner menu also
features a variety of sandwiches
from a Grilled Cheese ($ 2.99)
to a nice Crab Salad Sandwich
($ 5.95) all sandwiches can
be made on a choice of breads.
Appetizers include Buffalo Wings
($ 4.99), Crab Cakes ($ 4.95)
and Peel & Eat Shrimp ($
6.99)
As
for their full meal choices,
there are about a half dozen
choices ranging from Shrimp
Tempura ($ 10.95) to Surf &
Turf ($ 13.95). Side dishes
are available for each of those
meals.
If
you’re in the mood for
New England Clam Chowder, The
Old Salty Dog serves a great
one. This chowder is thick and
creamy, with lots of clams.
If you are a clam chowder lover
like me, this one is worthy
of a sampling of two. It’s
pretty rich, so a cup is usually
enough for me. My son however,
could probably down a bowl without
much of a problem.
The
bar stocks a wide variety of
English tap beers. You can actually
have a well poured glass of
Guinness. They also serve Boddingtons
Ale which is not your typical
run of the mill beach bar beer.
The beer selection is a nice
change of pace from the gallons
of Miller Light and Budweiser.
The
next time you’re wandering
through Siesta Village and find
yourself at the north end, stop
in at the Old Salty Dog for
a great pub meal or a refreshing
ale. The service is always fast
and friendly and the food consistently
good.
The
Old Salty Dog is located at
5023 Ocean Blvd. in Siesta Village.
They also have another location
at 1601 Ken Thompson Parkway,
City Island.
