Another week down. It’s a quick slide to the holiday season and the end of 2011. It’s probably a good time to order that fresh Thanksgiving turkey. We’ve got a bunch of great places here in Sarasota to do that. I better remember to add that to my to-do list.

There’s a shuffle at the top for last weeks Top SIX. Trader Vic’s new concept restaurant, their Island Bar & Grill heads our lineup. They’ve only been open for a couple of weeks, but, lots of you are searching for information about them on dineSarasota.com. In case you missed it last night, The Travel Channel premiered the Sarasota episode of its popular series, Man vs. Food. If you have been at all plugged in to any social media outlet that has a Sarasota connection it was impossible to miss the buzz surrounding it. There were some Facebook posts, but there was a huge amount of Twitter Tweets.

If you didn’t happen to catch the showing last night, there will be plenty of chances to watch a repeat of the episode. In case you’re wondering what happened, here’s a recap of last nights action.

The show featured three Sarasota Restaurants, Yoder’s, The Old Salty Dog and Munchies 420 Cafe.

Over at Yoder’s Adam talked with some folks eating at the restaurant and got an in depth look at how they make their amazing homemade pies and awesome fried chicken. He even had a sit down with Yoder’s founder, Amanda Yoder.

The next stop was The Old Salty Dog, City Island location. Where Adam sampled a fully loaded “Salty Dog”. For those who aren’t familiar with it, their famous “Salty Dog” is a battered and deep fried hot dog on a bun. The fully loaded version has more toppings on it than we have space to mention here.

For this episode Adam took on a Mystery Challenge. The location of that challenge was Munchies 420 Cafe in Gulf Gate. After a kitchen tour, Adam had a lesson on how Munchies makes their unbelievable “Fat Sandwiches”. Watching the construction of a Fat Sandy, was enlightening, if not heart stopping.

Adam’s Mystery Challenge was not downing one of those crazy huge Fat Sandwiches, but a hot wing challenge. 10 of Munchies insanely hot Fire In Your Hole wings. As it turned out, Adam was no match for the wings. After just two wings he pulled the plug and declared that food had defeated man.

All in all a great show. It was a nice showcase for Sarasota and I’m sure the restaurants they featured will benefit greatly by the extra exposure. Maybe it’s time for you to do your own Man vs. Food Sarasota food tour.

On Saturday May 2nd, Sarasota’s very own Yoder’s Restaurant will play host to the Travel Channel’s, Man vs. Food. That’s right, Adam Richman will be at the restaurant filming a segment for the popular food show to be aired later this year. They will be shooting a few kitchen segments during the day and then around 5:30pm, Adam and the Travel Channel crew will be taping in the main dining room. He will be talking with Yoder’s customers about the restaurant and the great comfort food they serve.

Although Adam is know for his over the top food challenges, we understand that will not be part of their visit to the restaurant. It should be a lot of fun and great exposure for Yoder’s and Sarasota. We’ll bring you more details about when the episode will air when they are available.

Summer time and fall have traditionally been the best times of year for pie making and of course, pie eating. All those perfectly ripened fresh fruits just waiting to be picked and baked. You can almost smell the wonderful aroma of a freshly made pie baking away right now.

Well, if you don’t want to go to all the trouble that making a great pie takes, there’s a great Sarasota alternative. Yoder’s Restaurant has been serving up the best homemade pies in the area since 1975. There’s nothing for you to do except walk in, sit down and enjoy. You can see all the great varieties on display in the traditional pie case in the front of the restaurant. Oh, you could also take one of their homemade creations home to enjoy in the comfort and privacy of your own house, but you would miss part of the experience.

Mrs. Yoder says that “The secret is in the crust and the fresh fruit fillings”. We say that over 30 years of pie baking experience doesn’t hurt either.  Try a Peanut Butter Cream Pie, it’s the pie that made Yoder’s famous.
