
FIRST LOOK – Nikki’s Greek Cafe
Gulf Gate is the home of another delicious food find.

π¨ WOW! Thank you and welcome aboard. I’m not entirely sure where all of you are coming from, but I appreciate each and every one of you! You know who you are. You’re one of the 131 new subscribers who have signed up for Sarasota Bites in just the past eight days! Usually, we add about 50 for the whole month, so this is a big surge (for us anyway! π). π― This didn’t start out to be a “sandwich” piece. Honestly, it didn’t. But there’s no getting around it; it kind of is.
We’re not talking about a sandwich in the traditional sense of two (or three) slices of bread with some protein, veggies, and the condiment of the moment in between. This is more like a sandwich in the broader “handheld” kind of way.
Over in the Gulf Gate neighborhood, searching for that hidden food gem sometimes feels like a sport. It’s not like a treasure hunt or geocaching. It just happens that this particular area seems to be fertile ground for smallish, upstart restaurant operations. It’s been that way for years. Let’s hope it never changes.
Over the years, places have popped up that were the perfect fit for this part of town that has fewer parking issues, lower starting rents, and a looser, more “Bohemian” feel to it.
Some names (old and new) – Lovely Square, Tony’s Chicago Beef Company, Mouthole Smashburgers & BBQ, Divan, and now Nikki’s Greek Cafe (6584 Superior Ave. | 941- 366-9799). These are some of the family-owned and operated restaurants that give Gulf Gate its distinct personality.

I’m not Greek, but I have a pretty reasonable history with Greek food. My first “real” job was washing dishes in a Greek diner/restaurant in Chicago’s south suburbs. I was in Junior High; that’s the Midwest equivalent of Middle School.
I worked one day a week busing tables and washing dishes. For my labors, I was rewarded with being able to cook my own dinner in a real restaurant kitchen, access to an endless supply of breadsticks, and a ride home in an unheated 1960s VW Bug. OH, let’s not forget a wage of $7 per shift. That was for a 5-hour shift! (The minimum wage back then was $1.60 per hour. I wasn’t horribly underpaid but could still have used a better agent! π΅)
The place was owned and operated by a local Greek family and had a menu that included pretty much anything your taste buds could ask for. Buried among the melts, omelets, soups, and stews were a few Greek dishes: including my fav, the Gyro. π We will leave the debate on how to pronounce this wrap for another time. π
Fast forward almost 50 years, and I am still a BIG fan of that savory, salty, “lamby,” and delicious “sandwich.” There are certainly great Gyro versions around town. And if you happen to be near that quirky, eclectic Gulf Gate neighborhood, you can find a great one thereβ¦

π Nikki’s menu hits all of the right notes. When it comes to traditional Greek fare, you’ll have decisions to make. We’ll get to that Gyro in a minute. But the list is also scattered with a few other, harder-to-find options. I mean, when was the last time that you saw Fried Smelt (Marithes) on a Sarasota restaurant menu? That’s exactly what I thought! π£
One thing I love about the menu is that it isn’t gigantic. There is more than enough to choose from, but this is NOT a Cheesecake Factory situation. Options are good, but I hate being overrun with choices.
Small, but mighty! I don’t think anyone would describe Nikki’s as roomy. It’s definitely not large enough for your big, fat, Greek wedding. But it’s certainly can accommodate a reasonably sized elopement! π

π If you’ve ever been to Tarpon Springs, Nikki’s will remind you of that type of smallish family-owned spot. Cozy and comfortable would be good descriptors.

Of course, they have a daily specials board. Sadly, I didn’t get to try the Makaronia me Kima (the Greek version of Italian Bolognese), but I’m guessing it was mighty tasty.
What did we order? I think you already know the answer to that question!


We didn’t get a backstage tour the day we were there. So, I can’t tell you if the meat was cut off the “cone” or not. But I will tell you that this sandwich was oozing with flavor and just filling enough for lunch. It’s a gyro that I would happily reunite with someday.
The BIG surprise! I’ll admit, I was not really expecting the smelt (and I almost ordered it just for a childhood flashback). But when I spied my all-time favorite Greek appetizer spread on the menu, I knew there was no way I would be able to say NO to it!

This version of Taramasalata was just sensational. It’s not a word that I toss around very often. It was that good. This spread is house-made. Light, salty, deliciousness in every savory “schmear.” This is not to be passed on. If you go (and I hope that you will), please, please, please grab an order of this. You will thank me later!
β THE BOTTOM LINE β If you’re on the hunt for a good, reasonably priced Greek meal in a super casual, family environment, you can stop searching. Nikki’s Greek Cafe is the definition of that. Great homemade food served with a personal touch. It’s a small but mighty menu that really delivers the goods!

π ODDS & ENDS
π· Corks will be Popped! And forks will be wielded! Yes, it’s that time of year. The Sarasota-Manatee Originals annual Forks & Corks celebration will get underway at the end of the month. Yes, the Grand Tasting was sold out almost instantaneously. (It’s a local tradition!)

π What’s in a Name? That rumble you heard was folks beating a path to the brand new NΕnnΕ Umberto on St. Armands Circle. Amber Mayner and Simone Salustri had run their Le Colonne restaurant until Helene and Milton had other plans for them and their business. Now they’re back open under a new nameplate. Some Le Colonne favorites are mixed into the new menu. We’ll give you a FIRST LOOK soon!
