Mister O1: What’s In a Name?
There’s a story behind that unusual name. And a star-shaped pizza waiting at the end of it.
🤔 What’s In a Name? Well, a lot, actually. Naming a restaurant is a big deal. It’s the first impression that someone might have of a new place (or even an old one).
Names can give up some pretty big clues about what to expect.
Some tip you off to the cuisine: The Island Chick-N-Shack, Brine Seafood & Raw Bar, and Brick’s Smoked Meats.
Others let you know who’s in charge: Michael’s On East, Florence and the Spice Boys, and Tony’s Chicago Beef.
Or you may get a good idea of where they’re located: Southside Deli, Casey Key Fish House, and Anna Maria Oyster Bar.
All those names say something, whether it’s intentional or maybe just by accident.
➡️ Then there’s this one: Mister O1 Extraordinary Pizza. What? Let’s do a little detective work and find out what this name is really all about…

First, we know this is a pizza place. You don’t just throw the word “pizza” in there as a red herring (that would be dumb 🙃).
Second, we have a good idea that this pizza is on another level. Or at least that’s what the name implies.
📝 Extraordinary: going far beyond what is usual, normal, or expected.
That part was easy. It’s the beginning of this name that requires some additional digging.
📋 The “O-1” visa is something that flies under most people’s radar (I know it wasn’t on mine!). That is, unless you happen to be “an individual who possesses extraordinary ability or achievement and has risen to the very top of your respective field.” Then the O-1 visa has your name written all over it!
Chef Renato Viola is one of these people. He has won the Pizza World Championship not once, but twice. Seems like this would put you in the category of extraordinary!
Back in 2014, Chef Renato figured the U.S. could use a good dose of extraordinary pizza. So, of course, Miami Beach would be the logical place to introduce himself to a pizza-loving country.
Fast forward eight years and Mister O1 earns a place in the Michelin Guide. Yes, Mister O1 is a “Michelin Recommended” restaurant. Toss that in with the World Pizza Championship victories, and you start to see the extraordinary part of this thing come into view.

It is now time to see if Mister O1 lives up to that very lofty word.

Mister O1 sits in a University Parkway strip. It’s got some nice visible frontage and lots of parking.

You can sit outside if you prefer your pizza “al fresco.” 📝 If you use that term in Italy, it’s going to hit a little differently than here. Over there it’s slang for spending some time in jail! 😳

Maybe indoors would be a little safer. No confusion there!

There is absolutely no mystery here. The nice open kitchen means you can watch the pizza makers do their thing.

Watching the pizza-making is fun and all, but we’re really here for the eating more than the spectating.

Our server, Bella, gave us the whole history of Mister O1. It’s kind of a nice touch, really. She did tell us that the Star Luca (star-shaped pizza filled with ricotta cheese, mozzarella, Italian tomato sauce, spicy Calabrese salami, basil) was the “star” of the pizza show here. Obviously, we need to test that out.

They’ve got a few things you can use to spice up your pie. I know it says Mister O1 on that private-label olive oil, but it has my name written all over it!
🍕 Pizza Time!

This is SO different than any other pizza I’ve seen. Super unique. That’s the ricotta cheese in each of the star “pockets.”
👀 Some Pizza Observations: Except for the crust, this pie was super thin. I was surprised by how crispy it was, given its thinness. I love how every slice gets its own dollop of ricotta. Kind of like a pizza within a pizza!

This was really a knockout. It only comes in one size. And that’s OK. This is a reasonably sized pie. Fine for two people (or one big eater).
We weren’t satisfied with just one tasting today. The most intriguing pizza on the menu is the Coffee Paolo (Italian tomato sauce, mozzarella, gorgonzola blue cheese, natural honey, coffee, spicy Calabrese salami). Coffee? Yes, coffee! ☕

This one was different. A little spicy, “herbily” sweet, and surprisingly not overly “coffeed.” It has a light dusting of ground coffee sprinkled on it (you can see the black specks). Those grounds help to build a super complex flavor profile for this unique pie.
All right! Let’s wrap up this visit to one of Sarasota’s newest additions to the pizza landscape. Mister O1 Extraordinary Pizza breathes some creativity and imagination into a space that can at times be filled with some pretty ordinary and forgettable pies.
Yes, there are other contenders for top honors around town. We even have another Michelin Recommended pizza spot (Tralia Pizza). But Mister O1 is working hard to define what an extraordinary pizza should be all about. 🍕

📋 END NOTES:
(a) Two other examples of chefs who have taken advantage of the O-1 visa opportunity are Swiss-German Chef Björn Weissgerber and celebrated Indian Chef Rajesh Selvaraj. They both brought their extraordinary culinary talents to the U.S.
(b) A nice hospitality touch. While we were enjoying our meal, Amber, a member of the Mister O1 management team, stopped by to see how things were going. We watched as she gave every table in the house the same personal attention. Nice! 😊
(c) Every pizza on the Mister O1 menu can be made into a “Star” pizza. All you have to do is ask. That means you can try your own hand at the extraordinary pizza-making business. Go for it!
